Seth Curry leads Duke Blue Devils past Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Seth Curry scored 19 of his 22 points in the first half as No. 6 Duke opened a 20-point lead and sent Virginia Tech to its ninth consecutive loss, 88-56 on Thursday night.
Rasheed Sulaimon added 17 points and Mason Plumlee had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils (23-3, 10-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) as they moved coach Mike Krzyzewski into sole possession of third place on the career list for victories at one school with 877.
He was tied with Adolph Rupp of Kentucky and is now two behind North Carolina's Dean Smith. Syracuse's Jim Boeheim leads with 910 victories.
BOX SCORE: No. 6 Duke 88, Virginia Tech 56
Erick Green, the nation's leading scorer with a 25.3 average coming in, led the Hokies (11-15, 2-11) with 22 points. C.J. Barksdale had a career-best 14 points and Cadarian Raines added 10, but no one else scored more than five as the Hokies shot just 43 percent and made only 1 of 16 3-point attempts.
Duke, meantime, buried the Hokies quickly with a 3-point barrage.
Curry had three 3s and Quinn Cook and Sulaimon also connected in an early 19-6 run, and after the teams swapped baskets, Curry capped a 15-3 burst for Duke with his fourth 3-pointer of the half.

That made the score 37-17 after 16 minutes, and Curry added a fifth 3 before halftime. Duke was 8 for 9 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. The Hokies, meantime, had 10 field goals, none of them 3s.
Duke finished 12 for 17 on 3-pointers and shot 53.6 percent (30 of 56) overall.
Coming off a 2-point loss at Maryland, the Blue Devils started fast in the second half, too, getting an inside basket by Josh Hairston, a baseline jumper from Cook and a 3 from Sulaimon to make it 55-30.
The Hokies never threatened again and Virginia Tech coach James Johnson pulled Green with just over 6 minutes to play and trailing 73-49. Krzyzewski followed with wholesale changes shortly thereafter.
The victory kept Duke solidly in second place in the ACC, two games ahead of North Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia.

Dead was the key word for NBA trade deadline

0 komentar
The NBA trade deadline didn't prove worthy of the hype that came in the months leading up to it, but it did live up to its name.
It was dead all right.
The Boston Celtics' breakup that so many league executives anticipated didn't happen, so Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and their green gang will remain. The Brooklyn Nets, who have the convenient blank-check policy that comes with being owner by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, went shopping for another star but ultimately stood pat.
COLLECTIVE WOES: Why CBA led to lame deadline
The Utah Jazz, who had been rumored to be moving big men Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap for years now, decided to let them become free agents this summer and get ready to spend their estimated $33 million in salary cap room. Chris Paul's Los Angeles Clippers, who had spoken with the Celtics about Garnett and were thinking about upgrading their roster one more time to help with a championship push, made no moves.
The Lakers, just days after the passing of legendary owner Jerry Buss, held onto center Dwight Howard while proclaiming that he is still the centerpiece of their future. Even Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith, the biggest name that was known to be on the market and seemingly a sure thing to be relocated, went nowhere.

NBA fans who were hoping for blockbuster moves were left with the underwhelming reality that J.J. Redick was the headliner here. And unless it's still 2006 and he's wearing a Duke jersey, there's something wrong with that picture.
Redick was traded from the Orlando Magic to the Milwaukee Bucks, who spent much of the day trying to team Smith with Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings but fell short in their pursuit when the Hawks backed out of the talks as the deadline neared. And so it was for those teams and so many others, their big moves left for another day and segueing into a summer that should be far more compelling.
REDICK TRADE: Breaking down 6-player deal
For NBA teams that aren't in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, team-building via free agency as opposed to trades can be a dicey proposition because it's far from certain that top talent will come their way. Case in point: the Hawks.
While the collective bargaining agreement grants the Hawks a competitive edge when it comes to trying to re-sign Smith, he is still not expected to return to the place where his career began in 2004. So with an estimated $38 million in salary cap room at their disposal after the season, will the Hawks convince someone like Dwight Howard to come their way (it's not likely) or be left wishing they'd secured more valuable pieces before the deadline?
JOSH SMITH: Why the Hawks decided to keep him for now
There's even more uncertainty in a place like Milwaukee, where Redick will be a free agent along with the player who has openly admitted he's doing research on all the big-market teams, fourth-year point guard Brandon Jennings (though he will be restricted, meaning the Bucks can match any offer). Making matters worse for the Bucks in terms of their uncertain core, shooting guard Monta Ellis has the ability to opt out of the final year of his deal after this season. Milwaukee is expected to have nearly $20 million in cap room.
If there was a winner in it all, it may have been the Houston Rockets. After signing Jeremy Lin in the summer, landing James Harden from Oklahoma City in late October and quickly becoming one of the league's most promising young teams, they landed the top five pick in last year's draft from Sacramento, forward Thomas Robinson, in a six-player deal with the Kings. The Rockets, who are interested in Smith but opted against trading for him now since they could sign him as a free agent, will be front and center when the summer rolls around because they have ample cap room and an outside shot at landing Howard. Maybe then the excitement will begin.

NBA trades

The NBA trade deadline hit the snooze button.
Things stayed mostly quiet even as the 3 p.m. ET came and went. Not only were talks of blockbuster deals limited, but even minor trades talks have had trouble gaining traction.
Where were the blockbuster deals similar to the Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams trades in 2011? Or even Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut in 2012?
The expected big names stayed put. J.J. Redick might have been the biggest to move. Were teams simply comfortable with their rosters? That's not as likely as one explanation: the impact of the 2011 collective-bargaining agreement.
JOSH SMITH: Why did he stay put?
REDICK TRADE: Dealt as part of 6-player move
CELTICS: Add much-needed scoring guard
Front-office executives are trying to navigate the agreement for its short- and long-term impact. Starting next season, the luxury tax increases. Instead of dollar tax for every dollar over the luxury tax, the new tax starts at $1.50 for every dollar over for the first $4.99 million over the luxury tax and escalates to $3.25 for every dollar a team is $15 million to $19.99 million over the cap. And even more punitive over $20 million.
Take the Brooklyn Nets for example. Right now, they are projected to be about $12 million over the luxury tax next season. This season and in previous seasons, that's a $12 million tax bill. Next season, it's a $21.2 million bill, giving teams reason to pause.
Plus, there's one more deterrent. If a team is a taxpayer four times in five seasons, that tax increases even more. That $1.50 for the first $4.99 million over the tax becomes $2.50, and that $3.25 becomes $4.25.

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 4

Kamis, 21 Februari 2013 0 komentar
We're praying to the gadget gods that the PlayStation 4 won't arrive with the astronomical launch price of its predecessor. Looking at the £250 Nintendo Wii U though, we'd expect both the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 to launch at around £300-£350. Any more than that and it'll sting wallets just a little too much.

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 4 – release date

It's not yet clear whether we can expect a release date for the PlayStation 4 at Sony's event on February 20th – and Microsoft is keeping its cards equally close to its chest on the subject of the Xbox 720. It's reasonable to expect that both consoles will be out in time for Christmas 2013 – though developers have reported that the PS4 may be delayed in Europe until early 2014. The race is on!

The next-gen consoles from both camps will be more than consoles. They'll be mini media hub PCs, fighting for that coveted spot under your living room telly and grappling for their hold on your credit card. From streaming music and video to renting and buying content, Sony and Microsoft want you to buy into their worlds, Apple iTunes-style.

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 4 – games

While both consoles will undoubtedly keep their AAA exclusive titles like Halo and the God of War series, heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed and Generic First Person Shooter: Battlefield Ops IX will still be available for both consoles – though it's up in the air whether GTA V will be putting in an appearance on the next-gen consoles, given its September release date.
Since Sony appears to have ditched the PS3's Cell architecture for the PS 4, and that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 will probably be running similar processors and AMD graphics cards, we should see even more simultaneous cross-platform launches this next generation. Much to the delight of keyboard and mouse fraggers, no doubt.
As for launch titles? Well, it's still early days yet, but launch titles for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were a bit hit and miss, so hopefully Sony and Microsoft have learned their lesson. New Killzone and Gears of War titles on launch day? Yes please.

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 4 – controllers

We don't expect either the Xbox 360 controller or PlayStation 4 DualShock design to change much; the PS4 controller will reportedly resemble the existing DualShock, adding a touchscreen in place of the Select and Start buttons. So, don't expect any outlandish innovations like the original PlayStation 3 "boomerang" controller (pictured).
As well as handheld controllers, Sony and Microsoft are expected to further develop their motion-capture control systems, with the Xbox 720 reportedly featuring an updated Kinect 2.0 and AR glasses, and Edge Magazine reporting that the PS4 will pack an updated version of the PlayStation Eye.

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 4 – Blu-ray and optical drive

We can almost guarantee that Microsoft has swallowed an entire plate of humble pie and will include a Blu-ray drive in the Xbox 720. Although there's been talk of the PS4 ditching physical media to rely on the cloud all together, it's unlikely that either Microsoft or Sony will be ditching the discs any time soon – it would be too much of a risk to alienate the millions of gamers with sketchy internet connections. If they do decide to ditch the Blu-ray drives then there's the possibility of using separate USB drives or even piggy backing off your PC's optical drive, MacBook Air-style.

Sony has confirmed that it'll be holding a PlayStation event on February 20th, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that all the signs point to a PlayStation 4 announcement. Let's take a look at what we know – and how Sony's eagerly anticipated console will stack up against its rival, Microsoft's Xbox 720.

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 4 – graphics and power

Although the final specs have yet to be officially revealed, you can rest assured that the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will be specced to the hilt.
Both the Xbox 720 and PS4 will reportedly pack eight 1.6GHz CPU cores which, coupled with their souped up 800MHz AMD 7000 series graphics cards, should deliver more than enough power to get gamers hot under the collar.
The key performance difference (if there will be any) between the two consoles could be down to the RAM. While the Xbox 720 is expected to have 8GB over the PlayStation 4's 4GB, it'll reportedly be running slower DDR3 RAM over the PlayStation 4's DDR5 offering. Strip away the letters and numbers and that means that the PlayStation 4 will have more bandwidth to play around with – which could possibly give PS4 titles a slight visual edge over the Xbox 720's offerings.
4K graphics could also be supported by both consoles, according to Wired – and although the number of 4K sets at launch will be minimal to say the least, it's important to future-proof the Xbox 720 and PS4 against the coming wave of 4K TVs. The Xbox 720 may also take advantage of Microsoft's new Illumiroom technology, which uses the Kinect and a projector to extend your TV display across an entire room.
